What is a Daiquiri?
According to David A. Embury’s The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks, a daiquiri is one of six basic drinks traditionally consisting of eight parts white Cuban rum, two parts lime juice, and one part simple syrup. The drink is then shaken well with finely crushed ice and served in a cocktail glass. The word “daiquirí” is Taíno in origin and is the name of a beach and iron mine in Cuba. It is believed that the drink was created by an American miner named Jennings Cox who lived in Cuba during the Spanish-American War.
From there, it is believed that the drink was introduced to New York City in 1902 by the owner of mines in Santiago de Cuba, William A. Chanler. Daiquiris were popularized in the 1940s during World War ll when the rationing of whiskey and vodka began. Open trade policies with Cuba and the Caribbean made rum widely available. Rum, which was once a drink associated with sailors, then became a hot commodity.
The form of the daiquiri that you are likely most familiar with is a frozen variation of the original. Popular frozen daiquiris, like the strawberry daiquiri, a puree of strawberries, rum, cane sugar, and lime. Frozen daiquiris are now served en masse, usually made in large machines, similar to the ones that make slushies at gas stations. These are made with different flavors, fruits, and alcohol. You can find this at your typical daiquiri bar on the Las Vegas Strip. The more traditional daiquiri can be found at your favorite craft cocktail bar.
